a funny...
thanks, Carol!
hahaha!! we saw this in the back parking lot we used in Wellesley on Saturday. thanks to Carol for the pic!
a compendium...
a weekendwow! what a busy weekend this has been. and we still have one more day to enjoy it!
we had a delightful time in Wellesley yesterday. we got to see my folks, and Carol and Keith, and Keith's mom, and of course Elissa! and several of her friends, especially Jess(though I can't remember the qualifier for this particular Jess!) it was a beautiful day, though a bit windy and certainly not too warm. a good day to travel, and visit. we had a delicious, late, long lunch, and then went back to the campus where we commandeered a table and some chairs and sat on the un-used tennis courts while the boys scootered and roller bladed. Keith and the boys and I also tossed a football around. we tried to keep in the sunshine, though a few clouds and a brisk wind did their best to dissuade us. a short walk to the lake where we saw a swan, and the lovely topiary gardens across the way. "like a picture", Chellis said. he was right. Maxfield Parrish had nothing on nature... ice cream for dinner, and then back on the road. a beautiful evening to drive and not only did we see deer, but we also saw a BEAR! somewhere near New London, New Hampshire a large black bear ambled across the interstate. very exciting! Marnie said it was the first bear she had ever seen. quite a sight. all in all the day was much too short, and it will be some time before we see Elissa again, as she leaves for Korea before we get to Iowa this summer. hopefully it will work out for her to come home at Christmas, and for C, K, and E to make their bi-annual trip out here for the holidays. time will tell. we know that she will have a fabulous year, and that her host family is in for a treat! it was great to see my folks, and just whet our appetite for our visit out there this summer. they were holding up very well under the constant go-go-go of the weekend, even taking in a Boston Pops concert the first night they were there! cool!
church this morning, and a few odd jobs around the house this afternoon. got the clothesline put up, and the lawn mowed. backed up some files on the computer, and surfed a bit. looking forward to sleeping in tomorrow, and just enjoying the day. the week gets very busy from there on out, so I need to rest up!
I have a few links I'll share with you, but I think I'll wait. have a great day!
for all my loyal readers
from my web host..."On Friday, May 28th between the hours of 7PM and 8PM Pacific Standard Time, the server "nevis" will be in a maintenance window for 30-45 minutes. Our technicians will be performing an upgrade and reconfiguration of the firewall your server utilizes.Your website, e-mail and control panel may not be accessible while the upgrade is in progress."
so, if you can't get here, that's why...
off to Boston for the day tomorrow, hope you have a good one, too!
amazing
a quoteyou'll find this in the forums, thank you, Kathy! but it needs to be shared in a much larger way:

stunning.
impeach them all...
this is just asininethrough Respectful of Otters I got this link:
Freedom of Information?there won't be an election in November, because there won't be a country left... Nixon was a crook, but these guys go way beyond that. they have stolen the United States away from its citizens bit by bit. I am just stunned to open-jawed amazement by the idea that they are doing this, and so far getting away with the destruction. please send this link to all your Rethuglican friends, and tell them that they better shape up, or they won't have anything left. is this really what they want? and can you even begin to imagine what he'll do if he gets re-elected? (correction, elected, he was never elected in the first place...)
arrgh...

thanks to Chellis for this great link. you can spend a lot of time here. which are your favorites?
more on being tax exempt
from Respectful of Otters...Rivka at Otters adds more to the tax exempt issue in Texas:
Respectful of Otters - Tax Exempt, May 25, 2004I especially appreciate this line:
"But churches fall more generally into the category of non-profits - like museums, charities, and schools - which aren't taxed because they provide services generally recognized as beneficial to society."I can understand this, and it helps to think about it that way. though, perhaps trash hauling/recycling companies might want to get in on the tax exempt status. I'm sure I could think of a few others...
anyway, it's good to know that somebody is awake in Texas.
hey! we're endangered!
how quaint...Vermont Named Among Most Endangered Places
of course, it's Wal-Mart... I've always said that towns need to insist that a Wal-Mart re-use existing buildings downtown, and not build a giant store on the outskirts. towns should also insist on decent wages and benefits for employees. better than that, however, would be to just say no to a Wal-Mart store in the first place... I know, I know, we've done our fair share of shopping there, but we are really making an effort to not shop there anymore, although it's pretty hard these days to not shop at some giant chain or another. what do you think?
anyway, enough of that. rain here again today, which really doesn't bother me at all much anymore after we had to put in a well a couple of years back...
down the drain...
successfully!following a successful performance of A Perfect Day, I was able to get the sink put back up, and the drain reconnected. it works! and no leaks. so far... nice to have the whole bathroom back.
for more info about A Perfect Day, go here: Fyre and Lightning Consort we had a great crowd, and it went very well. I'm not sure the last time we performed it, but after a couple of rehearsals, it fell right back into place. it really is an amazing work, and deserves a long life.
a fairly regular week at school, for me anyway(Marnie and Emerson and Lincoln have an overnight field trip later in the week), and then down to Boston on Saturday for a quick trip for Elissa's graduation. actually, we'll miss the graduation, but we'll get to see most of the family, including my folks, whom we haven't seen since last summer. looking forward to that!
ok, I'll keep it short tonight. have a great day tomorrow.

plumbing...
the depths...I have spent the day being a plumber. I have the shower fixture replaced, and Chellis tells me it works great, and I have replaced the broken toilet seat. how glamorous... now, I'm waiting for the drill driver to charge, so I can rehang the sink... rehang the sink? yup. the drain pipe broke while I was trying to get under the tub to fix the shower. Marnie was on her way into town to do some errands, so she picked up a new piece while in town. meanwhile, I got the shower done. so far so good. (well, not so good. I was, by then, not in the best of tempers...) anyway, she returned and it turns our what she got wasn't long enough. well, huh, how can I make this work. ok, there's a bit of room to lower the sink so the pipe will reach, and actually, the sink might be a bit more stable that way anyway, since I can rest it on the edge of the tub surround. good. well, the sink is hung on a cast-iron bracket screwed into the wall with several hefty screws. no problem, I'll get the drill driver out, and have it done in a jiffy. right. I got a few out, and then the battery died. no problem, I'll just put in the other battery. huh, this one is dead, too. I thought I had them charged. guess not. ok, I can remove the last couple by hand, and that went fine. now to measure, and figure out where the bracket needs to go. good. let's put the screws back in. huh, seems like the backing is oak or something. it's not, but I can no more screw them in by hand than I can do a backflip. so, I guess I wait until the battery is charged. in the meantime, I'll do the toilet seat. though it has it's share of difficulties, I get that done in good order. ok, fast forward to about an hour or so later, I'll try the drill driver. needless to say, it hasn't charged long enough. ok, I can find something else to do. check my email, etc. ok, let me see if I have everything ready to go... huh, where's the little slip nut to attach the drain pipe to the trap? oh, I threw that in the bag along with the old drainpipe for Marnie to take to town so she can be sure to get the right pipe. wasn't that nice of the hardware store guy to DISPOSE of the old one for her... the second trip to town, this time to pick up the little slip nut. no, actually, that was awhile ago, but I'm finally checking to see if it fits. huh, it's too big. I wonder if I happen to have one of these downstairs? yup. guess I didn't need to make that trip to buy the wrong size since I already had four... trip number three to town. huh, the store is closed.
so, the sink now sits on the floor, waiting until tomorrow, when I can go the hardware stores in Barre to see if they have the right size slipnut. I'll put it all together tonight, without the nut(that would be me...), and see how badly it leaks, and then find one after church. of course, chances are they don't make this size anymnore, and I'll have to replace the whole trap anyway... that will be fun. I'll let you know how it goes...
Texas, of course...
a higher power...I haven't had a chance to keep up with all my blog reading, but I found this on Respectful of Otters, which she posted on Wednesday: Unitarian group denied tax status. both Otters and Sisyphus Shrugged have things to say about it...
these people are really something else. maybe that's it. they aren't really people...
though I must say that I might agree with those that say no church should be tax exempt. I'll need to think about that a bit. it does seem a strange reading of the separation of church and state.
mowin' the lawn...
must be nearly summer...mowed the lawn for the first time this afternoon. I don't mind the first couple of times, but by the time August rolls around I've had enough. Chellis did part of it a couple of times last year, so I think he's going to get good at it this year... it sure looks good, though. along with Marnie's gardens the yard is going to look great this year. I mowed around the forget-me-nots...
Elissa is visiting for a couple of days! yeah! it's always a pleasure to have her here, and soon we won't see her for a year. she leaves for Korea on her Fulbright in early July. unfortunately I have school tomorrow, and a rehearsal for Perfect Day in the evening, so I won't see much of her. she's going to leave either tomorrow night or very early Saturday morning, as her class is taking a trip to Six Flags, and she would never miss an amusement park! we'll see her next weekend at her graduation, along with my folks! we're looking forward to that. more about that next week.
my jazz concert went well last night. the kids sang well, and it feels good to check it off the list of the end-of-year activities. less than four weeks to go!
Marnie is grilling out chicken, and I had my first peanuts on the deck after I got the lawn done. what a great feeling! salted-in-the-shell peanuts are a summertime deck tradition. nice to get started on that, too.
ok, dinner's almost ready. later...

I'm still here...just wanted to say hi. it's been several crazy days in a row, and I haven't felt like I had the energy or inclination to write the blog. not that there aren't things to say, but I won't have the time until Thursday evening to really get into anything. but, we're almost there. Jazz concert at school tomorrow night, and then things free up for a few days. the Counterpoint concerts went well, even if they were sparsely attended. we got a good review: Counterpoint review
okay, more in a couple of days. see you then.

traveling...been doing a bit of surfing this afternoon, thought I would share some of my travels... most of these came thanks to the current events page at Wikipedia:
- evidence of the impact crater resonsible for the "Great Dying"
- the Library at Alexandria, a BBC article and the Wikipedia page: Library of Alexandria discovered, and Library of Alexandria-Wikipedia
- Cassini goes to Saturn, some incredible images: Cassini-Saturn
well I'd better get ready to make the journey to Manchester, and since I've been to Saturn and back, this will be an easy trip...
Saturday morning...
actually afternoon...ah, slept in, woke to a beautiful morning, mid 70's... I awoke with a headache, but it was nothing a couple cups of coffee wouldn't handle. the Counterpoint concert went very well last night; not a huge crowd, but very appreciative. we'd (obviously) like to get larger audiences, especially for this series, as we're self-promoting these concerts, meaning we don't have sponsorship, which means we only get the gate receipts... promotion is definitely the hardest part of this game. but we're getting there. a concert tonight in Manchester, and tomorrow in Burlington. we're developing good followings in both those cities, so hopefully we'll do well. our next concert is in June, at the Stowe Choral Festival. I have quite a bit of solo work in that one, and I definitely have some work to do! Bob's gone this coming week to rehearse with Peter, Paul, & Mary, so I'm leading rehearsal on Tuesday night. should be fun!
I will get back to normal, what ever that is, next week, though I think have something most evening, ranging from pizza delivery night, to a school jazz concert on Wednesday.
for those of you curious about Escher sentences, here's the link again: Escher sentences
ok, time to really get my day started. have a good one!!
what to say...
out and about...I've been doing a lot of surfing tonight. traveling from blog to blog, site to site, idea to idea. there are little sets among the blogs; sites linked to each other, repeating links to this story or that, talking around an idea. they recursively reference each other and then you find a link that takes you somewhere completely different. (side note: it seems grammatically incorrect to end a sentence with different. am I right? is it wrong?) I have been spending much of my surf time on language blogs of late, and it's really quite interesting to see how much we analyze our most basic form of communication. (I should probably not say "basic", but who cares...? non-spoken/non-written forms of communication perhaps offer a depth of energy[?] not found in reading/writing. have to think about that. I'm sure that writes and poets would disagree. just different, I guess...)
one other thing that I think I'll spend time thinking about: do we talk with our friends and aquaintances the same way we communicate online? in other words, people from all over the world may comment on someone's blog about something, but do they have those same conversations with people they actually know? of course, I suppose it's possible that a lot of people don't know others with which they would have such conversations. I know that it is not unusual to hear about people who get strange looks when they bring up topics that are common online. bring up Escher sentences at the office and you're likely to be avoided...
well, (probably more than) enough of that.
Counterpoint tomorrow, and Friday, and Saturday, and Sunday. I should be looking at my music right now, but Marnie and Chellis are watching something on the tv, so the piano isn't possible. I'll get a bit of time tomorrow at school, so it will be fine. I'm just looking forward to performing this program in front of an audience. though, our first shot is in front of several thousand people on VPR... cool.
Tuesday...
nothing and everything to saythis day went by so quickly, I'm not sure what I did. school was school, and the kids were a bit antsy since the day was so beautiful. I did have the door and windows wide open, and there was a lovely breeze. frankly, I wouldn't have minded going outside either! oh well... Matt and I got our pizza kit fundraiser orders done after school, and although we didn't do as well as previous times, it wasn't too bad. better than it looked like it would be. we do three a year, and the kids are pretty well burnt out by now. as are we. but we have an extensive lesson scholarship fund, and other expenses for which this is basically our only income. so, it has to be done. but, it's really not that bad, as fundraisers go. we make around $3500 for the year doing them, so all in all, not a bad way to do it. ok, enough of that.
I've spent the evening finding cool programs for my Palm, including a great little database program that allows me to keep track of the hymns we use at church. it's basically as functional as the db I have on my computer, and I can sort and do all the fun stuff you can do with information in a db. neat. now I just need to input all the hymns we've used so far... maybe I'll wait until next year to start... I also found a neat fretboard visualizer, that will plays scales(tons of them!), chords and single notes. you can choose from several different instruments, and it's very slick. plus a little simple tuner/metronome. ah, toys...
fairly nice weather forecast for the next few days, and starting Thursday, life gets very busy. Counterpoint... should be a good weekend. oh, and we'll be on Vermont Public Radio on Friday morning, I think at 11. VPR.net
alright, probably ought to stop. have a wonderful tomorrow, where-ever you may be...
backwards...
the age of progress? We have met the enemy and he is us.wasn't it Pogo that said that? I've been thinking about that these last couple of days as I've struggled with putting together this eNewsletter. I ended up sending it as text, without any of the fancy formatting I spent hours on, because it just wasn't worth it to try to figure out how to get every email client to accept what I was sending. and now my sister tells me that my home page is messing up on her browser... the email thing bothers me, because my guess is that it's spam filters, etc, that are messing up the email, and that means we're doing it to ourselves. things could be so good if we'd quit being jerks to each other. it's not just global conflict, it's the smallest things, like junk mail. (which isn't so small, I guess) I know, this is so simplistic, but fundamentally, it's true. we just need to think! why is that so hard? the whole golden rule thing has really never taken hold... you would think a specie-ally beneficial idea would be easy to implement. perhaps there really is more than one species of human, and we're in conflict for resources. (did I "jump the shark" with that one?) anyway, I will think more about this and see if I can put something together that's a little more reasoned and coherent. if you have thoughts, drop a comment my way. the bottom line is, we make it harder on ourselves by being hard on each other.
I put a couple of new links down in the little link box in the right column, Language Hat, and Laputan Logic. great stuff and well worth a visit. there are plenty of smart, kind, thoughtful(as in full of thought-I already said kind) people out there, we just need to find and support them... have a great day.
up and down...
frustration and successI've been working on an eNewsletter for Counterpoint this weekend, and it's been a very frustrating experience. things just haven't worked the way I expected them to, and I've had to try a lot of ideas, most of which led to even greater frustration. that being said, I think I have gotten it to work, though I haven't tried it on anyone but me, so far, so... I have sent it to my Dad, and as soon as he gets a chance, he'll look it over for me, and let me know if it's working. he's on AOL, so if it looks good there, I should be ok. unfortunately, this has really been a mac problem. they're rare, but this was a hassle. basically, they changed the capabilities of the Mail program when they updated it, and in doing so, broke a very useful(for me, anyway, and others, based upon what I've been reading in the discussion forums...) feature. not sure why they do that, but I'm not a software programmer... you know I am a serious mac fanatic, but I'm not blinded.
well, my Dad says the text comes through ok, but no images. damn. I think that must be an AOL problem, but I'll have to wait and see until I can send it to someone else. I like to get in a couple of tests before I send it out. we have about 35 people on the mailing list, and I want to make sure we're making a good impression!
Chellis just got home from spending the day with a couple of friends at a climbing, uh, a climbing place. what are they called? a climbing store? I don't think so... anyway, he had a great time, and was full of stories about belaying this wall or that. very cool. I used to free climb a lot when I was in high school. we lived about a half an hour from Mt. Rushmore, and there was great climbing in the rocks behind and around there. really good times. we were undoubtedly very foolhardy in the things we did, but it was great. doubt I could do it now. but, who knows...
I hope that you had a wonderful Mother's Day, especially if you are a mother! it was beautiful here, though the bugs are already appearing. grr... I've heard that vitamin B12 is good for that. might have to try that. anything to keep the black flies away.
more than enough...
to entertain and amaze you...I stumbled across a couple of sites today(thanks, Uncle Jazzbeau!). the first, which gave me plenty to think about after reading the first couple of blogs: Language Log.
the last site that I will mention is solely for fun, Ugly Zoo.
have a great day!
a sign of the times?
what about your area?found this today: http://www.vermontgasprices.com/index.asp
pretty interesting, and gratifying to find our local store on the good end of the list! how do these compare to where you are?
Friday...
the week-ends...I have a few minutes here at the end of the day at school, so I thought I would drop the blog a line. we've hit another nice stretch of weather, which is most welcome. nothing like sunshine and blue skies to help the day flow well. we had a small Arbor Day celebration here today, and my 5/6 chorus sang Big Green Tree, while a sugar maple(what else?!) was planted out on front of the school. this is a yearly gathering, and it's a nice break in the late morning. though keeping my 60 kids in line was a bit of a challenge!
I should be recording grades right now, but this is a bit more relaxing. though, if I continue to put off the grading, that will make more tension later. why can't I learn that lesson? I will put myself into a tizzy by procrastinating, and yet, I keep doing it. why would we continue habits that are detrimental to us? don't you think eveolution would have done a better job of dealing with such things? or are there subtle kinds of addictions? that satisfying my need NOT to do something at that moment is a larger driver than the tension that comes later? hmm. something relaxing to think about, eh?
ok, I'm going to go record some grades. otherwise I'll put it in my bag to take home this weekend, and I won't do it then, either.
a new day...
well, I said not long ago now that we're into May things will be going by fast at school. humph. right now they're dragging... this week is seeming to take a long time. time is funny that way. actually, there isn't a lot going on this week, and I suppose that accounts for the perception. things get busy next week with Counterpoint concerts, and then a school jazz concert the week after that, and... I guess I am enjoying this little respite. and it gave me a chance to get the web site going. I'm very happy with the way it looks right now, I only have a little thing to fix on the blog archive page which is really no big deal, and I should be able to let it run for awhile. I did scan a couple more tree pictures, including the one I'm using for the background. so maybe I can get a new pictures page going one of these days.
alright. what do you want to talk about? drop a comment and let's see what happens...
tweaking...
can't leave well enough alone...I've added the tree background. we'll see if that works. I may need to fade it a bit more to make the text legible. let me know. I like it, though! thanks to Amy for the great idea.
we woke up to about four inches of snow this morning. sheesh. I had dad's little truck, because the van was in the shop(turned out to be the water pump... ka-ching! did you hear the cash register?), and I didn't want to drive it down to the village, so Marnie took me to meet Matt. a little pickup with rear wheel drive and no weight in the back, is not my idea of fun on our hill with fresh snow. anyway, most of the snow was melted by the time I got home from school(Marnie met me at Staples, where Matt had dropped me off), but we're forecast for rain, and more possible snow this week. I hope it isn't snowing in Iowa City, where my sister Carol will celebrate her birthday tomorrow! Happy Birthday, Carol!! and I hope it's nice where you are.
not much more to add tonight. I hope to get back on a regular blog schedule, now that the formatting/coding stuff is done for a while. maybe I can actually write about something interesting to someone besides me...
have a great one..
how's it look?
for curiosity's sake...I'm curious as to how the page looks in different browsers and platforms. I checked in Explorer on a Windows machine, and the left column, which should be about 25% of the screen, was more like 50%. in Explorer on my mac, the middle column was very skinny, with a lot of space on either side. I'm also wondering about AOL. it is the biggest challenge, to get the page fairly consistent across the board, so let me know! if you can send a small screenshot, that would be great. or just ignore this whole message... :)
back...
thank goodness I'm not a surgeon...well, the funny thing about all of this, is I was just in a very bad mood because I had totally messed up all the work that I had done over the last couple of days, and more than likely, no one noticed anyway. to me, it was a total disaster... I did learn a valuable lesson about backing up changes. duh. I had to completely recreate all the changes that I had made to one of the blog files. had I made a backup, I could have just put that in, but no, did I make that backup? well, I have now. I hope I remembered all of it. I guess I'll discover whatever I missed at some point. big sigh...
ok, we'll see if we can get back to normal now. let me know if you find any problems.
smile, rog, smile...
damn...
double damnobviously, something broke...
up and running!
woohoo!well, I think we're there. at least for now. please let me know if you have any problems; links that don't work, etc. there are bound to be a few. but I think we're ok for now. there are still some issues around the archive files, but those aren't a big deal yet. you can also find my old blogs in the menu. if you're feeling nostalgic...
alright, here we go!!
and remember, you can leave comments now!

The Butterfly Effect
a work-in-progress...Events of recent weeks have set me thinking about how integrated our lives actually are - in spite of all we may think. Persons involved in close-knit relationships with friends or family may be examples of what this all means. It has reminded me of The Butterfly Effect.
I've been thinking a lot about that "The Butterfly Effect." In our world - which we are discovering is becoming more and more integrated whether we like it or not -- this is an important consideration. I find that the effect works in many kinds of systems, incidents, et al. As in families:
[def.] The "Butterfly Effect" is the propensity of a system to be sensitive to initial conditions. Such systems over time become unpredictable, this idea gave rise to the notion of a butterfly flapping its wings in one area of the world, causing a tornado or some such weather event to occur in another remote area of the world.
Thus, in other words, A "butterfly" flapping its wings as a member of a close-knit family, although the members may be separated by miles - does, indeed, have its ripple effect throughout the whole system. What takes place in a far-off place, in the life of a single member of the 'system,' causes profound effects down (or up) the family tree - wherever those distant 'twigs' may be located. For example, a family member's graduation from an Ivy League College or a prestigious West Coast University - or a significant job promotion, makes its mark on siblings, parents, cousins, et al., wherever they may be, sometimes with serious consequences. Even decisions or changes in personal relationships among members of the system, show up in others, in far-away places throughout the system.
The same effect is seen when dropping a pebble in a quiet pool - the concentric ripples continue outwardly, to include the entire pool.
getting there...
a double blog. here and there...well, I'm making headway toward blog integration. sounds ominous, doesn't it? you can see it here: the look of things to come...
there are still a few bugs to work out; a few broken links and text the wrong color, but I'm pretty pleased. we'll see what kind of time I have to work on it this week, but I'm fairly close to making the switch. though I'll need to figure out how to link back to all these old blogs... if it's not one thing, it's another. I do really like the comments feature, and some of the other little things. makes the site a bit more interactive. I hope my thousands of loyal followers jump in...
anyway, it's late for a school night, and I have a headache, so I think I'll quit for the day. at least I had some success. it was an up and down day that way, but this is a good way to end it. have a great tomorrow.
A Bloggy Day in Yanktontown
Why do I have the feeling that a Blog is something that could really suck one in???I am intrigued by the idea of contributing to a blog, and a bit afraid of how addictive it could be. I also, however, must resist the urge to wait until I have time to "do it right"! So, tonight, for better or worse, I have stepped into the world of the blog. (Oh no...I'm going under...h-e-l-p-p....)
